National Union of grain producers within the framework of business visit to South Africa in the person of President Paul Skurikhina met with South African farmers in the truest sense of the word – in the fields. Weather for beginning of June to put it mildly – unfriendly – three degrees above zero. But despite this, the crop this year is excellent. During the first five weeks of the current season, which began in may, South Africa has exported 75.3 thousand tons of corn.
It is expected that the export of maize for the entire season at times surpassed the lean last season. According to forecasts by the South African national Committee for the evaluation of crops (CEC), the gross harvest of corn, harvesting of which will finish in June, will rise to a record 15.63 million tonnes In the dry last year, the gross harvest of corn did not exceed 7.78 million tonnes, which is the lowest figure for nine years. (Domestic consumption is about 10.5 million tons.)
Caused by crop failure shortage of corn in 2016 South Africa compensated for by imports, which increased more than three times (according to the news service on grain South Africa (SAGIS). The supply of yellow corn were from Argentina (830,6 kt), Brazil (94.4 thousand tons) and Romania (17.5 million tons), white corn from Mexico (417,1 thousand of tons) and USA (17.6 thousand tons).
Record harvest this year in South Africa – a signal for the Russian producers, as competition in the global market will be higher, and Russia in recent years is an exporter of corn.
Today the national Union of grain producers in the face of Michael Zybina will take part in the forum dedicated to the export of corn. The event will be held in South Africa in Johannesburg. Will address questions about potential export markets and requirements for product quality and logistics.
It is obvious that due to the remoteness of the South African ports from North and South America, South Africa it is easier to establish ties with Russia.
South Africa, the biggest maize producer on the African continent. But its development faces many barriers.
On the one hand, there is increased production of agricultural products. On the other hand, the rapid increase in population of the region leads to weak, but still growing trade deficit in the segment of food crops. Will definitely improve the situation in the region would help increase productivity in agriculture. However, this requires significant investments, whereas the investment climate in Africa is not yet very favourable and there is a wide range of limiting factors.
